Gorilla Naming ceremony in Rwanda
The ceremony core is about the mountain Gorilla, man's closest cousin which has 98% of human genes and are one of the world's most sought-after tourism attraction because of there character and way of life that makes every one yarn to be close to them and even touch. Though they are also found else where in the world, its said that a third of the world’s total mountain gorilla’s population live in Rwanda there for it was found important to preserve and care for the new born gorillas in Rwanda as a way of stimulating tourism in the country by the Rwanda Office of Tourism and National Park (ORTPN). This has now been made the Country's tradition and is locally reffered to as " Kwita Izina "
Gorilla Naming ceremony of 2009
This is the most recent Gorilla naming ceremony in Rwanda where the Amy’s baby was named 'Uzarama', which means ‘Eternal’ in the local language, at the fifth annual gorilla naming ceremony ‘Kwita Izina’ in Rwanda. This year’s event saw the naming of eighteen baby gorillas born in Rwanda during the last twelve months, indicating a steady birth rate in relation to previous years.
The UN Ambassador and Gorilla Organization trustee, Ian Redmond OBE also named a baby gorilla Umuganda (meaning ‘Community’ in Kinyarwanda) on behalf of the Year of the Gorilla 2009.
